Volunteer for Free in Itacaré, Brazil
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to help build a new non – governmental organization (NGO) in beautiful Itacaré, Brazil, on the northeastern coast of Brazil, where the rainforest (Mata Atlántica) meets the Atlantic Ocean and beautiful beaches, coconut trees, waterfalls and cacao plantations abound.
The Mission of ETIV is to connect international travelers with meaningful volunteer opportunities to support environmental conservation and development in Brazil.
Beginning in 2016, ETIV will be offering package deals to international travelers and volunteers, which will include a meaningful volunteer opportunity coupled with affordable housing, eco-tours and cultural education classes (including Portuguese, Samba and Capoeira). All of the profits gained from these package deals will go directly to support the NGO and our community projects.
However, volunteers that are willing and able to come to Brazil before 2016 to help build the organization before its official inception will be invited to volunteer with ETIV at NO COST. Volunteers will need to cover their own costs for housing, food, transportation and personal expenses, but we do offer very affordable rent to volunteers at our volunteer house. This also includes filtered water, toilet paper and hand soap.
ETIV Volunteer Coordinator Positions
Our Coordinator positions are our most advanced volunteer positions, which require the greatest amount of responsibility from volunteers as well as strong leadership skills. These positions are only suitable for more experienced volunteers who are looking to coordinate and manage one of our projects. In this position, volunteers will receive supervision from the director, but will be expected to be creative self-starters, who can take initiative and solve problems without anyone micro-managing the work. In addition, our coordinators will be expected to help recruit, manage and support other volunteers and community leaders that are supporting the same project the volunteer is coordinating for ETIV.
The ETIV Eco Tourism Coordinator
The ETIV Eco-Tourism Coordinator is a critical member of the ETIV team. It is the duty of the eco-tourism coordinator to take the lead in planning, organizing and overseeing the eco and adventure tours and cultural education packages that we will be offering to our volunteers in 2016. Knowledge and experience with business, marketing and/or tourism is a plus. The tourism coordinator will need to be able to coordinate with local tour agencies, teachers and community leaders to help us build partnerships and find the best deals, while also building and marketing the tour packages that we will be offering to volunteers and international travelers alike.
In addition, we also want to be able to offer tours to some of the local youth and families that work with our NGO, especially those that are becoming environmental and community leaders through our projects and programs. We have already connected with one local tour agency in town that will work with us to help cover the costs of tours for local youth; especially those who otherwise would never be able to afford these tours and who have never been able to visit these beautiful places right in their own backyards. This will be an exciting position as we further develop our package tours to be business savvy (and create a sustainable way to help fund our NGO and local community projects), while also allowing us to offer these tours to locals who otherwise would never be able to enjoy these kinds of experiences. This position requires a higher intermediate to advanced level of Portuguese and a commitment of at least 3 to 4 months of volunteering with us.
It is critical for volunteers to realize that things usually do not go as smoothly in a developing nation as they might be used to in their home countries. Things often take longer than expected, most things are not as organized and even simple things like accessing Wi-Fi, and withdrawing money from a cash machine can be problematic at times. The electricity and water shuts off from time to time, Brazilians are rarely on time and most people aren’t as consistent and reliable as we might prefer. While EITV strives to be as prompt, consistent and dependable as possible, it is important for volunteers to understand the constraints, cultural differences and circumstances with which we are living.
Therefore, it is imperative that all of our volunteers arrive with an open mind, willing to be flexible, help problem solve and able to take on the leadership necessary to help get things organized and structured. We are looking for courageous self-starters that are able to work well both independently and as a team. We will not be micro managing your work and we expect you to help create the structure that will help guide your position and the work for the volunteers that come after you. We definitely want to support you as best that we can and we encourage all volunteers to connect with us on a weekly basis and to meet with us anytime there is a question, concern or ideas and strategies to discuss.
Costs for Rent
Volunteers that arrive before 2016 will only be charged $165 a month for rent to help cover all of our bills and expenses, including all of the new furniture we recently purchased to provide a comfortable space for volunteers to live and work. This also includes Wi-Fi, filtered drinking water, toilet paper and hand soap.
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years or older on their date of arrival.
- Volunteers must commit at least 1 month of service and can usually stay for up to 6 months
- We ask that volunteers work for at least a month before taking vacation time, but again we are flexible to suit different needs and schedules.
- Volunteers work at least 4 hours day/20 hours a week, usually Monday – Friday from 9am to 1pm, although schedules can be flexible.
- All volunteers must complete the volunteer application form prior to acceptance and may also be asked for a Skype interview.
